Laundry

UPDATED at 9 pm: Thank you for all of your responses. These numbers are fascinating, as predicted! The average size household among 24 respondents is 4 people exactly; the average number of loads per household is 8.125--two loads per person almost exactly. My math major husband wanted to figure more numbers and enter them into an Excel spreadsheet, but I told him these simple calculations would suffice. =)

The other day as I was doing laundry, I thought it would be interesting to find out how much you do in an average week! This is just for fun--motivated only by my curiosity. In the comments, please indicate how many people are in your household, followed by the average number of loads you do in the course of a week. Tomorrow, I'll compile the numbers and share the averages.

My response would be 3, 4--3 people, 4 loads. Thanks for sharing--I think the results will be fascinating!

When I had all my children living at home, 13 people, I would do an average of 20 loads a week.
Now with 6 people, there is still about 10-15 loads a week.
I am not the norm, so you really can't include me, our washer runs everyday and has for years, except Sundays unless something desperate is need to be washed, like gym suits.

I usually do 5 loads of laundry a week (for 2 people!) -- sounds like a lot, but here is the breakdown:

1 load towels
1 load sheets/towels
1 load dark clothes
1 load light clothes
1 load Dad's running clothes

Maybe my washer has a smaller capacity than others!

It will be interesting to compare results -- Love you, Mom

2 adults, 3 loads

I only do towels and linens every three weeks or so (another 2 loads).

I now have two clotheslines strung across my apartment balcony for drying - I love them!

Hold on to your horses... we have 7 people in the house. My grandma lives with us. 6 beds. An average week? 20 loads. My children are getting older, and their clothing takes up more room now than when they were little. I change sheets once a week. I do towels twice a week. My husband and my son both run, and my son works at Dairy Queen and wears a uniform. Whew!

we have 3 people, (our son is disabled and can't wear anything twice plus he gets my clothes dirty too) so i do 5-7 loads a week. then hubby has sheets from his massage practice so we usually do 2-3 loads of sheets a week. we aren't the norm by any means, but i enjoy laundry so its ok.

6 people, 12 loads at the least. I'm thinking more like 20 when I do sheets and such.

No wonder I'm always buying soap!

There's only two of us, but I do a load every day. We live in Florida and we both play tennis almost every day, ride our bikes, play golf, etc. so there's always damp clothes that need washing. Not to mention the towels and sheets, etc.

Hugs!

3 people - a gazillion loads. No, seriously about 5-6. My husband likes going through clothes & towels.

4 people, 6 loads...but three of those people are BOYS and boys are DIRTY!

4 people, ~5 loads

Looking forward to your analysis!

4 people 10-12 loads

Towels, rugs, & sheets = 3-5 loads
The rest are clothes. I would rather own less clothing and do more laundry than have over-stuffed closets.

So, that's how we roll.

There's just one of me, but I do at least 3 loads of laundry per week...sometimes more, if I wash sheets, rugs, rags etc.

5 people, 8-10 loads...but we live in the desert where it is very windy and dusty, so things get dirty very easily!

I'm really obsessive about my laundry. Really obsessive. For only 2 people, I can do up to 8 loads of laundry a week.

I separate by whites, lights, darks, jeans, delicates, reds (if I have a lot), towels, sheets...

I'm amazed that the average is 8 loads! I guess I'm filling my loads too full! :)

Monica - that is part of it for me....I don't do HUGE loads, I would rather do more. Mainly because then the folding of a moderate sized load goes quicker and I can get them put away. That is just more manageable for me.
My husband prefers to do 3-4 overstuffed loads and be done with it but for me, seeing the mountain of laundry to fold & put away is too overwhelming!
